Book/Media Requests & Policies

Books and media will be placed at the Library Services Desk for pickup (unless you have registered for our Campus Delivery service). The borrower is responsible for returning items to the Library Services Desk by the due date indicated.

Interlibrary Loan requests for the following materials are NOT advisable:

  • eBooks
  • Textbooks
  • Books on closed reserve

The Health Sciences Library will attempt to fill all requests, but requests for these materials are often in high demand or not available from other libraries due to licensing restrictions. These requests are frequently not able to be filled or take much longer than our average turnaround time to arrive.

Interlibrary Loan Requests

Requests for materials not owned by Upstate HSL can be made within the library’s discovery platform, Primo, using the “Get it From Interlibrary Loan” links that display on requestable items when logged in. Requests can also be made directly within ILLiad using the Book or Media request form.

Books Not Picked Up

You will be sent an e-mail notifying you that your book is available for pick up at the Library, with reminders emails sent once per week. If we do not receive a response to our messages, your book will be returned to the lending library within 2-3 weeks. Repeated requests that are not picked up may be charged a fee at the discretion of the library.

Overdue Books

You will be sent a maximum of 4 overdue notices via e-mail. If you fail to return the book or to contact the Interlibrary Loan Department to make other arrangements, your book will be considered overdue and you will be blocked from using ILLiad. New ILL requests will not be processed if you have a severely overdue book.

Lost or Damaged Books

Customers are financially responsible for the full cost of replacement, including a processing fee, for any item that is lost or excessively damaged. Replacement costs are assessed and issued at the discretion of the lending library.

Renewals

A renewal may be requested for an Interlibrary Loan item, but the approval of the request depends on the lending library. Interlibrary Loan requests are usually only renewable once. You can request a renewal via your online library account. To renew, navigate to the “Loans” section of your library account, and click the renewal option next to your loan. Alternatively, you can call 315-464-5116 or email request@upstate.edu to request a renewal.

ILL Book Loan Periods

Loan periods vary depending on institution. ILL Books are not available for loan for an entire semester. Refer to the renewal process if you need to attempt to extend the loan period, however, we cannot guarantee renewals.

Hold Requests

Hold requests can be made when viewing a book or other loanable item in the library’s discovery platform, Primo. When signed into Primo, there will be an option to “Place a Hold”. This option will not be available for items on Reserves. Once checked out, all materials put on hold adhere to the library’s borrowing policies.
