Upstate HSL Celebrates Banned Book Week

Banned Books Week takes place from September 22 to 28, 2024, with the theme "Freed Between the Lines." Come visit the Library this week to get a Banned Books Week pin and check out our Banned Books display.

Banned Books Week began in 1982 in response to a significant increase in challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools. Traditionally held in the last week of September, this annual event celebrates the importance of free and open access to information. It unites the entire book community—librarians, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers—in supporting the freedom to explore and express ideas.

By spotlighting efforts nationwide to limit or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week raises awareness of the dangers of censorship. The American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) compiles lists of challenged books, based on reports from the media, librarians, and teachers across the country.
