The Library now offers access to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) online

Explore over 1,000 years of the English language with the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).

The OED is a well-respected guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over 500,000 words and phrases from across the English-speaking world. It traces usage through millions of quotes dating back to 1150 A.D., and tracks changes in a word’s spellings, meanings and uses over time.

As a historical dictionary, it goes beyond present-day definitions to explore how, when, and where different meanings evolved. The OED is updated and revised regularly, each time adding more depth and context.
