The Medical Photography Studio in 1938
The Archive of the Medical Photography Department of SUNY Upstate Medical University contains over 70,000 images, 1929 to 1990. The Department was established in 1928 by J. Howard Ferguson, 1926 graduate of the College of Medicine, professor, and Chair of the Pathology Department from 1942-1969. The selected images presented here, drawn from the years 1929-1958, document the history of SUNY Upstate, the history of medicine in central New York, and the history of medicine generally.
A note about dates - The image file names indicate the year an image was produced -- i.e., mpu_38_086_02.jpg was produced in 1938. (The filename shows at the top of the window when viewing a full-size image.) However, because the Department also copied existing images for faculty to use in lectures, many are older than the 1929 inception date of the Department. The descriptive information -- in many cases very rudimentary -- comes from the Department's log books and envelopes that house the negatives. Future enhancements to this site will include more descriptive information. If you have information about any images on this site we would be happy to hear from you.
