Library Interships

Service Mission

The Health Sciences Library provides health information resources and services to meet the current and emerging health information needs of the UPSTATE Medical University community. Members of the UPSTATE community include students and faculty from the College of Medicine, College of Graduate Studies, College of Nursing, and College of Health Professionals, as well as clinicians and staff of University Hospital, Golisano Children's Hospital and their outpatient locations. The Library welcomes patients and visitors from the Central New York community, offers resources and services to the general public, and sponsors a Family Resource Center serving patients and families at the Golisano Children's Hospital. Students from neighboring colleges, universities, and hospitals are also welcome to use library resources.

Intern Opportunities

The Library has enjoyed mutually beneficial experiences with interns over the years and currently has many areas of potential interest for an internship experience. Below are listed potential service areas and opportunities for interns at the Health Sciences Library and Family Resource Center.

Interlibrary Loan Internship

Interns will participate in all aspects of interlibrary loan including; lending items from our collection to other libraries; borrowing items from other libraries for Upstate customers; and document delivery of items from our print collections to customers. Interns will gain familiarity with relevant software, including Illiad; Ariel and Docline, as well as gain an understanding of copyright policies. Project opportunities could include: working with the ILLiad patron database, analyzing borrowing/lending data for trends, developing internal teaching documents and resources.
Skill Needed: Basic computer skills including Microsoft Excel. Have the ability to work independently, have excellent written and oral communication skills

Digital Content Internship

Interns will collaborate with the Digital Content Librarian to develop and produce content for the Health Sciences Library webpage. Project opportunities include: developing instructional tutorials, developing content for featured resources, developing tailored content for identified user groups. Interns will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Digital Content librarian and members of the Reference Team in creating tutorial scripts supporting bibliographic instruction and navigation of library resources; recording, editing and producing tutorials with Camtasia software; and will gain familiarity with resources and instructional content specific to the Health Sciences.
Skill Needed: Basic computer skills, strong writing and copyediting skills; the ability to work independently; willingness to record tutorial voiceovers a plus.

Reference Staff

Receive training and experience at the reference desk. Answer literature search and other reference requests.
Skill Needed: Applicants must have completed a reference course. Some experience with medical databases, especially PubMed/MEDLINE and CINAHL, preferred. Applicants should be able to commit to a regular, weekly 2 hour reference shift.

Cataloging Internship

Interns will gain experience navigating OCLC Connexion for copy cataloging and creation of original cataloging records, and Aleph for basic cataloging functions including the modification of holdings, withdrawing items, and running reports. Interns will learn about medical subject headings(MeSH), selecting appropriate MeSH heading, navigating the Nation Library of Medicines the MeSH database and its classification schedule. Project opportunities include: original cataloging of Upstate Medical University doctoral dissertations; copy cataloging recreational materials for the Family Resources Center, and modification of Aleph records due to active weeding project.
Skill Needed: Basic computer skills, the ability to work independently, excellent written and oral communication skills.

Digital Archiving Internship

Digitizing photos, documents, and manuscripts from various collections.

Collection Development Internship

Interns will gain experience working with Better World Books, Aleph, GOBI, Doody’s Core Titles and other collection development tools. Project opportunities include: participation in a full scale weeding project of the HSL main book collection; review of the Health Sciences Library collection at its Community General location; review and recommendation of the items within the Closed Reserve collection. Interns will have the opportunity to prepare pull lists for specific call number ranges, identify items for donation to Better World Books or World Wide Books, review selected items for Upstate Authors; make recommendations for item inclusion in Historical Collections; make recommendation for purchase for Closed Reserve Collection; work with Aleph to add fields for Upstate Authors, and modify holdings information.

Access Services Internship

Intern will receive training on Passage Point the Library security database and the integrated Library system, Aleph. Interns will assist with all Circulation procedures including: circulation of library materials, course reserve books & study room keys. Interns will also greet HSL guests, sign non-Upstate ID holders into Passage Point and print out visitor ID badges. Project opportunities include: participation with HSL signage committee to update HSL informational/directional signage, update signage in other locations; check for lost books via tracer cards and make purchase recommendations for lost items; assist Evening/Weekend supervisor with new art displays and/or author spotlight project; help develop new slideshows for Scholar's Den T.V; assist with the development of new student assistant training tools mirroring the Power Point presentation for new HSL employee orientation.
Skill Needed: Applicant must possess basic computer competencies and data entry ability. Strong interpersonal skills for customer contact.
